A Rovaniemi Destination Wedding from the UK

09 May 2026· 10 min read· by Rovaniemi Weddings

From London Gatwick to the Arctic Circle in under four hours — here is everything British couples need to know to plan a Rovaniemi wedding with confidence.

Why UK Couples Are Choosing Rovaniemi

The average cost of a wedding in the UK now sits at around £22,000, and in London that figure climbs past £27,000. For many couples, the arithmetic of a destination wedding in Finnish Lapland is quietly compelling: a beautifully styled ceremony in a snow-covered forest or a glass-roofed kota, with an intimate guest list, often comes in well beneath what a Saturday-in-June venue hire would cost at home.

But cost is rarely the whole story. Couples who enquire with us almost always mention the same things: the quality of the light, the silence of the taiga, the revontulet flickering above the dinner table. Finland consistently ranks among the world’s happiest countries, and there is something about its unhurried hospitality that makes guests feel genuinely looked after — rather than processed.

We expected logistics. We got magic. Our guests still talk about landing in Rovaniemi and stepping off the plane into a world made entirely of snow.

Flights from the UK to Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) has direct scheduled services from London Gatwick throughout the peak winter season, operated by easyJet and Ryanair. The flight takes roughly 3 hours 30 minutes — shorter than many domestic European routes — making the journey manageable even for older guests or those travelling with young children.

Prices vary considerably by timing. Booking in summer for the following winter wedding often yields the best fares; couples who leave it until October routinely pay two to three times more. Return fares from London in the £80–£150 range per person are achievable for early bookers, though prices rise steeply in December when seasonal demand peaks. We always advise sending guests a firm travel-booking window the moment you confirm your date — accommodation sells out fast.

  • Direct from London Gatwick — easyJet and Ryanair both operate seasonal routes, typically November through March.
  • Via Helsinki — Finnair flies London Heathrow to Helsinki (HEL) with onward connections to Rovaniemi; useful for guests travelling from outside London.
  • Regional UK airports — Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol connect via Helsinki or Stockholm; add roughly 2–3 hours to total travel time.
  • Booking lead time — aim for 9–12 months before a December or January wedding date to secure competitive fares for larger groups.

Legal Paperwork for UK Citizens

Finland allows citizens of any country to marry within its borders. The key step is the examination of impediments to marriage (avioliiton esteiden tutkinta), carried out by Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV). You apply in writing, and the process can take several weeks — we recommend initiating it at least three months before your ceremony date.

UK citizens will need to supply a Certificate of No Impediment from the General Register Office. Once the DVV examination is complete, you receive a certificate valid for four months. The ceremony can be civil or religious. After the ceremony, your Finnish marriage certificate is a legally recognised document in the UK. We are happy to guide you — reach out to us here.

Documents typically required

  • Valid passports for both partners.
  • Certificate of No Impediment from the General Register Office or a local register office.
  • Birth certificates — apostilled copies may be required; confirm requirements directly with DVV.
  • Divorce decree or death certificate of a former spouse, if applicable.
  • DVV impediment examination application — submitted in writing well in advance of the ceremony.

End-to-end, most UK couples find the paperwork process takes 8–12 weeks. We strongly recommend beginning within one month of confirming your wedding date.

Rovaniemi vs a UK Wedding: the Cost Picture

A Rovaniemi wedding can be cheaper, comparable, or more expensive than a UK wedding depending entirely on guest numbers and the level of styling you choose. What is almost always true is that the experience per pound spent is extraordinarily high.

A beautifully styled intimate ceremony for two to twelve guests — ceremony, styling and décor, photography, and a private dinner — typically falls in the €8,000–€18,000 range. A full celebration for thirty to fifty guests with a kota or forest venue, bespoke floral arrangements, and a guided aurora evening sits closer to €25,000–€45,000. Compare that with the average UK wedding at £22,000 — without a honeymoon — and the numbers begin to make sense, particularly when your guest list is shorter by design.

We had 18 guests instead of 80. Everyone who came truly wanted to be there. That shift in atmosphere is worth every penny of the travel.

One item UK couples often overlook is wedding insurance. Standard UK policies vary in how they handle overseas ceremonies; confirm your policy covers a civil ceremony abroad and includes appropriate cancellation protection.

A Three-Day Itinerary for British Guests

One of the most frequent questions we receive is: what will our guests actually do? Rovaniemi rewards even a short visit generously, and three nights gives everyone enough time to experience the landscape properly without feeling rushed.

Day one — arrival and orientation

Flights from London typically arrive at Rovaniemi Airport by mid-afternoon. The transfer to the city centre or wilderness lodges takes 20–40 minutes. The first evening is best kept easy: a warm meal, a short walk along the frozen Kemijoki, and an early night. In December the blue hour between 10:00 and 14:00 offers roughly 2.5 hours of luminous winter light — guests are invariably moved by it on arrival.

Day two — activities and the ceremony

A morning reindeer sleigh ride or snowmobile safari introduces guests to the landscape before the ceremony. Afternoon ceremonies work beautifully in kaamos light, with portraits taken in the golden-blue hour. The wedding dinner follows in a kota or candlelit forest clearing — our candles and lighting team know exactly how to make firelight do the work in these settings.

Day three — revontulet and farewell

A guided northern-lights excursion on the final evening gives guests the best chance of seeing the revontulet. Rovaniemi sits at 66.6°N magnetic latitude, and aurora activity is visible on roughly every other clear evening between September and March — a Kp-index of 2 is often sufficient at this latitude. Local guides track conditions through the day and route groups to dark-sky sites 10–20 minutes from the city.

Accommodation for Wedding Groups

Rovaniemi has a wide range of accommodation, from city-centre hotels near Arktikum to wilderness lodges and glass-roofed aurora cabins on the outskirts. For a wedding group, consolidating guests within one or two properties simplifies transfers and keeps the group together for shared moments.

Log cabin lodges — available from around €150–€250 per cabin per night — offer a quieter, more characterful stay and are more practical to block-book for groups. We can advise on properties and negotiate group rates; get in touch as early as possible for the best availability.

Choosing Your Season

December brings kaamos and the highest demand due to seasonal tourism; January is quieter and arguably the most photogenic month, with deep snow and temperatures between −10°C and −20°C. February and early March bring returning daylight — up to six or seven hours by mid-March — combined with excellent snow cover.

For couples less fixed on snow, late September and early October offer the amber and crimson of ruska (Lapland autumn), reliable aurora windows after 21:00, and temperatures that feel bracingly cool rather than extreme. Browse our portfolio and our approach to tablescapes to see how the seasons translate into styling.

  • November — first reliable snow, aurora season begins; temperatures −5°C to −15°C.
  • December — kaamos blue hour, deep winter atmosphere; book 12+ months ahead.
  • January — quietest month, temperatures −10°C to −20°C, excellent aurora probability.
  • February–March — daylight returns, snowshoeing and skiing conditions peak.
  • September–October — ruska foliage, aurora season opens, no extreme cold.

Your UK-to-Rovaniemi Planning Timeline

Once your date is confirmed, we begin holding accommodation and venue options while you initiate the DVV paperwork. Guest communications — save-the-date, travel guidance, and a practical arrival pack covering what to pack and what to expect from the cold — should go out at least nine months ahead for a winter wedding.

From first enquiry to a fully planned ceremony, most of our UK couples work with us over a 12–18 month horizon for winter weddings. Take a look through our portfolio for a sense of what is possible, then get in touch — we are always happy to talk through the first steps with no obligation.

Frequently asked

Still wondering?

01Is a Finnish marriage certificate legally recognised in the UK?+
Yes. A marriage legally performed in Finland is recognised as valid in the UK. You will receive a Finnish marriage certificate after the ceremony, which you may wish to have translated by a certified translator. You do not need to re-register the marriage in the UK, though you should update relevant documents — passport, driving licence, bank accounts — with any new name if applicable.
02How cold is it, and will our guests cope?+
January temperatures in Rovaniemi typically sit between −10°C and −20°C, which is very manageable with the right clothing. Finnish thermal outerwear is available to hire locally, and we provide every guest group with a detailed packing list well in advance. Most guests report that the dry Arctic air feels less biting than damp British winter weather.
03Can we guarantee we will see the northern lights?+
No reputable operator can guarantee aurora sightings, as they depend on solar activity and clear skies. Rovaniemi's location at 66.6°N means aurora is visible on roughly every second clear night between September and March. The majority of guests who stay three or more nights see the revontulet at least once.
04Do we need to speak Finnish for the ceremony or paperwork?+
No. The DVV examination process is available in English, and civil ceremonies can be conducted in English. We handle all local coordination in Finnish on your behalf, including liaising with venues, officiants, and suppliers.
05What is the minimum guest number for a Rovaniemi wedding?+
There is no minimum. We work with elopements for two people as happily as with celebrations for fifty. Many of our most beautifully realised events have been ceremonies for fewer than ten guests.
06How far in advance should we book for a December or January wedding?+
We recommend contacting us at least 12 months ahead, and ideally 15–18 months for December dates. Starting early gives you the best choice of dates, venues, and accommodation for your guests.
